Online Gaming Authority of India (OGAI): A Complete Citizen's Guide India has emerged as one of the world's largest online gaming markets, with millions of users participating in e-sports, online social games, and other digital gaming platforms. While the growth of the sector has created new opportunities for entertainment, innovation, and employment, it has also raised concerns relating to illegal online money games, financial fraud, addiction, misleading advertisements, and cyber security. OGAI as the statutory authority responsible for implementing the law and regulating the online gaming ecosystem in India. The Authority was constituted through a Gazette Notification dated 22 April 2026 and functions as an attached office under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). Why was OGAI established? The rapid expansion of online gaming created several regulatory challenges including illegal online money gaming platforms, financial fraud, unauthorised payment transactions, misleading advertisements, lack of uniform regulation, protection of children and vulnerable users, and promotion of legitimate e-sports and online social games. The Online Gaming Authority of India (OGAI) aims to create a structured and transparent framework for online gaming in India by promoting lawful e-sports and online social games, protecting citizens from illegal online money gaming, strengthening consumer safeguards, and supporting responsible growth of India's digital gaming ecosystem. Through the establishment of OGAI, citizens benefit through better consumer protection, safer online gaming, reduced fraud, greater transparency, improved grievance redressal, promotion of lawful e-sports and online social games and better regulatory coordination. Composition of OGAI In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-sections (1) and (2) of section 8 of the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 (32 of 2025), the Central Government constituted the Online Gaming Authority of India, consisting of the following persons. Major Functions of OGAI Registration of Eligible Online Games - Maintains the official register of eligible online games. Promotion of E-Sports- Promotes recognised competitive e-sports. Recognition of Online Social Games - Recognises eligible online social games under the statutory framework. Public Grievance Redressal - Handles complaints relating to matters covered by the Act. Enforcement - Issues directions, orders and codes of practice while coordinating with authorised agencies. Powers of the Authority Registration of eligible games, regulatory oversight, compliance directions, statutory penalties, coordination with banks and payment service providers, recommending blocking of prohibited online money gaming services, and working with authorised investigating officers. Types of Games Covered E-Sports: Competitive skill-based gaming. Online Social Games: Games intended for recreation and social interaction. Online Money Games: Prohibited under the Act along with related services and advertisements. Citizen Grievance Mechanism Citizens may report unlawful online gaming platforms, suspected violations of the Act, regulatory complaints and non-compliance by regulated entities.
