What is DIGIPIN? DIGIPIN (Digital Postal Index Number) is a nationwide, geo-coded digital addressing system developed by the Department of Posts, Ministry of Communications, Government of India, in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), ISRO. What does DIGIPIN do? DIGIPIN divides India into approximately 4 metre × 4 metre geographical grid cells. Each cell is assigned a unique 10-character alphanumeric code derived from latitude and longitude. In this way, a physical location can be represented by a standardized digital identifier. Unlike a conventional postal address, which describes a place through details such as house number, street, locality and city, DIGIPIN is fundamentally a geospatial reference. It identifies the location itself rather than the person living there. Why was DIGIPIN introduced? India has many areas where conventional addresses may be incomplete, inconsistent, changing or difficult to locate. This is particularly relevant in rural and remote areas, newly developed settlements and locations without clearly defined street or house numbers. DIGIPIN is intended to provide a common digital addressing layer that can improve the precision and consistency of location information. The Department of Posts describes it as a foundation for an Address-as-a-Service ecosystem and a component of India’s digital public infrastructure. DIGIPIN and PIN Code: what is the difference? DIGIPIN can support a wide range of applications, including postal and e-commerce deliveries, logistics, emergency response, disaster management, government service delivery, welfare programmes and location-based digital services. Because the code is based on geography, it remains independent of changes to road names, locality names or buildings constructed on the land. Is DIGIPIN a replacement for an address? No. DIGIPIN is designed to complement existing addresses and PIN codes rather than replace them. It provides an additional digital layer that can make a location easier to identify and process in computer systems. DIGIPIN also does not identify a person. The same location can have the same DIGIPIN regardless of who lives or works there. The Department of Posts states that the DIGIPIN system itself does not store personal information against the code. How can you find your DIGIPIN? The Department of Posts provides a public “Know Your DIGIPIN” web application. With location access enabled, the application can use the device's latitude and longitude to generate the DIGIPIN for the user’s location. No login or sign-up is required for fetching a DIGIPIN through the application. Conclusion DIGIPIN represents an important step toward a standardized digital addressing layer for India.
