<ul>
<li><strong>Central public authorities:</strong> Rs. 10 per application under the RTI Rules, 2012.</li>
<li><strong>State public authorities:</strong> the fee is fixed by each state's own RTI rules and <strong>varies by state</strong>. Check the state's RTI rules or portal before paying.</li>
<li><strong>Below Poverty Line (BPL)</strong> applicants pay <strong>no fee</strong> under Section 7(5). Attach proof of BPL status.</li>
</ul>
<h3>Additional charges for copies of records</h3>
<p>For central authorities under the RTI Rules, 2012 (state rules may differ):</p>
<ul>
<li>Rs. 2 per page for A4/A3 photocopies</li>
<li>Actual cost for larger copies, samples or models</li>
<li>Rs. 50 per diskette/CD (media as prescribed)</li>
<li>Printed publications at the printed price</li>
<li>Inspection of records: first hour free, then Rs. 5 for each subsequent hour or fraction thereof</li>
</ul>
<p>The PIO must inform you in writing of any additional fee, with calculations. The time between that intimation and your payment is excluded from the 30-day period under Section 7(3).</p>
<h3>How to pay</h3>
<ul>
<li><strong>Online:</strong> on rtionline.gov.in and state portals, use the payment modes shown on the official portal.</li>
<li><strong>Offline:</strong> Indian Postal Order (IPO), payable to the Accounts Officer of the public authority; or court-fee stamp, demand draft/banker's cheque, or cash against receipt, <strong>as the authority's RTI rules allow</strong>. When in doubt, an IPO is the safest choice for central authorities.</li>
</ul>
<h3>Two fee rules worth knowing</h3>
<ol>
<li><strong>Late reply means free information.</strong> If the authority supplies information beyond the applicable time limit, it must do so free of the additional copying charges under Section 7(6).</li>
<li><strong>First appeal fee:</strong> there is no fee for a first appeal to central public authorities; some states prescribe a fee in their rules.</li>
